Dear Cogito, ...ergo sum? :-) Welcome to the forum! Literacy was a problem for the Samaritans more than the Jews. Every Jewish child was taught to read Hebrew in Synagogue. Anyone who wanted to do any kind of business would know Greek -- it was the Terra Lingua of the time. Even the Romans used it with their subjugated peoples -- Latin tended to be used for the internal business of Rome. There are some good arguments that Jesus sometimes taught in Greek -- nothing perfectly definitive, though. Jewish scribes were not the kind you imagine.
