1 | A humdinger can anyone answer this? | Luke 3:36 | Appleseed | 135957
to Add - it is not the answer - I think the only logic is that Cainan died before his son Selah came into the world and his father Arphaxad adopted him as his son. This was possible but is there another explanation beside this logic that is unstantiated |

These figures confront us with some very distinct problems. In view of the great length of life ascribed to the earlier patriarchs, should the years always be understood as full calendar years? Why does the Septuagint include Cainan in the list, while the Hebrew text does not? Could there be gaps in the genealogical lists? In fact, it appears that the lists of Genesis 5 and 11 are not complete records, but selections of outstanding men. Packer, J. (1997, c1995). Nelson's illustrated manners and customs of the Bible (Page 32). Nashville: Thomas Nelson. Cainan [Kenan] (“acquired”). [1] A son of Enosh and ancestor of Christ (Gen. 5:9; Luke 3:37). The KJV inconsistently spells the same name Kenan in First Chronicles 1:2. [2] A son of Arphaxad and an ancestor of Christ (Luke 3:36). It should be noted that this name occurs in the Septuagint text and not in the Hebrew of Genesis 10:24; 11:12. The presence of this name shows that the early lists in Genesis were not meant to be complete. Packer, J. (1997, c1995). Nelson's illustrated manners and customs of the Bible (Page 627). 3 | Could the Septuagint be more accurate? | Luke 3:36 | Appleseed | 136027
I would agree with this if the Bible in Gen 11:12 doesn't distinctly say that Arphaxad was 35years when he fathered Shelah. This is a continous sentence. So the incomplete list or gap between Arphaxad and Shelah is not there. Also these are 2 different people. What is possible is the Luke used the Septuagint to get the list (Jesus also used it or else Luke wouldn't of. Jesus taught Luke. Also strong evidence that the Septuagint was used in Jesus day). So it is right in the Septuagint but how the question is why the difference. I have extracted the same verses from Gen. 11:12-13 for the Bible and the Septuagint. Why the difference between the 2, not a small change pretty significant to me. 12 Arpachshad was 35 years old when he became the father of Shelah (B). 12 And Arphaxad lived a hundred and thirty-five years, and begot Cainan (S). 13 After he became the father of Shelah, Arpachshad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters (B). 13 And Arphaxad lived after he had begotten Cainan, four hundred years, and begot sons and daughters, and died. And Cainan lived a hundred and thirty years and begot Sala; and Canaan lived after he had begotten Sala, three hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters, and died. (S) |

4 | Could the Septuagint be more accurate? | Luke 3:36 | EdB | 136033
I think you have hit uponm something that can't be answered. Most experts agree some of which I posted excerpts of their comments think that there was a scribal error in the Septuagint and that Luke just merely echoed it. However that answer leaves as many questions as it answers so I think we will have to conclude we just don't know. EdB |
