Hi, Lawrence... The answer is no, and that is quite a quandary. The temple contained clear records of ancestral lineage, but that was all lost in the destruction of the first century. The only ones that we know with certainty -- well, relative certainty! ;-) -- are the Leviim and Cohanim. Knowing who those folks are is important if a person is going to carefully following the Law in their own life. You need specific things from them for various reasons. So, of course, the big problem for modern Judaism is this: How will they know the Messiah if they cannot determine that he is from the line of Judah? They admit this is a problem. However, they sidestep it by asserting -- with no further explanation -- that when the Messiah comes, he will make it clear that he is the son of David. No wonder it was important that we have a clear lineage of Jesus Christ... one that, in His life time, could have been verified (and no doubt was) by anyone with access to the temple records.
