2 | Mary's Geneaology | Luke 3:23 | Douglas Renton | 203639 | ||
The Bible states in both Matthew and Luke that Jesus is connected to both David and Abraham through Joseph, his legal parent. This is according to the culture of that day. Male lineage was paramount. Joseph was Jesus legal parent and Jesus is accordingly adopted into these lines to fulfil Scripture. The lineage in Luke is thought to be that of Mary, but the Joseph line is still quoted. Mary may have links to David but they are not well attested, and they are probably from extra-Biblical evidence.In my opinion, there is great parallelism between Jesus being adopted into the line of David through Joseph and our adoption into the family of God through our new birth. What happened to Jesus is foreshadowing what happens to us. There seems to be a spiritual dimension to all of this.
