1 | Luke 16:18 | Luke 16:18 | Aileen | 220584
Luke 16:18 - NLT: For example, a man who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery. And anyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery." I have been divorced twice and am now married (for the third and last time) to a wonderful man. I have asked for forgiveness for the first two divorces. Because of my past marriages, am I committing adultery in the sight of God? Aileen
2 | Luke 16:18 | Luke 16:18 | Makarios | 220585
Greetings Aileen, Perhaps a bit of context about this passage will help explain. In Luke 16:18, Jesus is speaking to the worldly minded Pharisees, who while professing to be guardians of the Law, ignored the teachings of the Law about divorce, allowing it for any trivial cause. But Luke only stresses the main issue while Matthew (5:31-32; 19:3-9) expands more fully on the topic of divorce; making clear that Jesus permitted divorce in cases of 'unchastity' (Matt. 5:32, NASB). I believe that Jesus forgives divorce (John 4:17-19) even though the consequences of divorce remain and are a great hurt for people, families and the church at large. Blessings to you, Makarios |
