Hi, my pastor teaches that when Jesus teaches we need to “take up the cross” and follow Him that it can mean “take up HIS cross” which makes NO sense to me! How can I show him the error here? Thanks, Carolyn 56chevys@cox.net |

Hi, Carolyn Jean... Welcome to the forum! Look at the various passages that use the metaphor of taking up one's cross (Matthew 10:38; 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23; Luke 14:27). If we interpreted "his cross" as being Christ's cross, then where He says, "deny himself" we would have to interpret it as denying Christ. That certainly doesn't make much sense. Notice in particular the wording of Luke 14:26-27. Work through that passage trying to wrangle that kind of grammar from it -- it just doesn't compute. Furthermore, the two occurances of "his own" in those verses are explicitly speaking to the possession of the third person; i.e., the one who comes to Christ. In Him, Doc |
