1 | Should we give one tenth of our income? | Luke 11:42 | Ineke | 79127 | ||
On Tenth? (Luke 11:42) At bible study on Thursday night, the passage that was studied was Luke 11v37-46, the Six Woes. One thing that was brought up in the study was verse 42- "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of Gos. YOu should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone." The questions that where asked from this were- Do you think we should be giving one tenth of our income to God? Yes or No How do you think the Pharisees got it wrong? Our answers from the study, went along the lines of- we should aim to give one tenth, so yes, and the Pharisees got it wrong, because they started giving one tenth as if it meant nothing, they where being dishonest in their giving. I was interested in knowing what others think of the questions and if you have anything other to add, or even if you disagree. |

Yes - a tenth is the minimum! NIV Study Bible Notes: Luke 11:42 It is easy to rationalize not helping others because we have already given to the church, but a person who follows Jesus should share with needy neighbors. While tithing is important to the life of the church, our compassion must not stop there. Where we can help, we should help. Luke 11:42-52 Jesus criticized the Pharisees and the experts in the law harshly because they (1) washed their outsides but not their insides, (2) remembered to give a tenth of even their garden herbs, but neglected justice, (3) loved praise and attention, (4) loaded people down with burdensome religious demands, (5) would not accept the truth about Jesus, and (6) prevented others from believing the truth as well. They went wrong by focusing on outward appearances and ignoring the inner condition of their hearts. We do the same when our service comes from a desire to be seen rather than from a pure heart and out of a love for others. People may sometimes be fooled, but God isn't. Don't be a Christian on the outside only. Bring your inner life under God's control, and your outer life will naturally reflect him. |
