Nolan ... He wasn't one of the 12. He also may of not travelled with Jesus, the 12 and others. It is interesting that the 12 could not cast out a demon (vv. 17-28). I wonder if the 12 were jealous. I say this since they were arguing who was the greatest (vv. 33-37). Searching Scripture Steve |

Yes, good point Steve. The MacArthur Study Bible states for Mark 9:38, "John answered. The only recorded instance in the synoptic gospels in which he alone speaks. In light of Jesus' rebuke (vv. 35-37), John's conscience troubled him about an earlier incident he had been involved in. It is clear that he unnamed exorcist was not a fraud because he actually was casting out demons. He was apparently a true believer in Jesus; John and the others opposed him because he was not openly and officially allied with Jesus, as they were." Zondervan's NASB Study Bible suggests, "not following us. The man apparently was a believer, but he was not one of the exclusive company of the twelve. Nevertheless he acted in Jesus' name and had done what the disciples, on at least one occasion, had not been able to do (see vv. 14-18,28)." |
