Greetings Julia! You asked "What does it mean by "tradition of men"? Some people say that holidays are traditions of men...?" in relation to Mark 7:8. John Gill's commentary is very good here: "Ye hold the tradition of men: very significantly are the elders, whom the, Jews revered, and whose traditions and constitutions they extolled above the Scriptures, called "men", in distinction from "God", whose commands they neglected; which exposes and aggravates their sin, that they should leave the one, which had the stamp of divine authority on them, and hold the other, which were only the devices of men's brains;" We should never give man's word the same weight as God's Word. The Pharisees were taking a commandment or opinion from men, and teaching or promoting it as a doctrine from God (legalism). Blessings to you, Makarios |

Makarios, So would an example of "tradition of men" be John Smith and the Book of Mormon? Or like JW Charles Taze Russell and the Watchtower ? They taught people things that were NOT from God and people followed? And it makes sense that holidays are a tradition that was started by man,so can you help me understand the difference? Thanks Julia |

Dear Julia, These are questions of authority. The groups you mention are promulgating another authority. "10. The supreme judge, by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, doctrines of men, and private spirits, are to be examined, and in whose sentence we are to rest, can be no other but the Holy Scripture delivered by the Spirit, into which Scripture so delivered, our faith is finally resolved (Matthew 22:29, 31-32; Ephesians 2:20; Acts 28:23)." --1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (1.10) This is how it was expressed by the old Baptist divines, but it is consistently affirmed in Church History.
