Uncle Dave: Go to the parallel passage in Mark's Gospel, 7:11. One of the best interpretative methods to use in learning Scripture is the so-called Inductive Study Method, i.e., comparing Scripture with Scripture, which is its own best interpreter. In the Markan passage you will see a transliteration of this word "gift" or "giving," which is "Corban." Mark then translates it for us as "given to God." It could also be understood to mean "offering to God." ...... Now by using this word Corban in a religious vow, an irresponsible Jewish son could formally dedicate ("give") to God, i.e., to the temple, monetary resources that otherwise could have gone for the support of his parents. But this money, however, did not necessarily have to go for religious purposes, even though the teachers of the law held that the Corban oath was binding. But the practice was, in Jesus' time, one of many traditions that adhered to the letter of the law while ignoring its spirit. The would-be donor could and sometimes did renege. Thus, the Corban forumla was oftentimes corrupted and used as a cop-out, an excuse, an alibi, a means by which to circumvent the clear responsibility of children toward their parents, as prescribed by the law. In the passage, Jesus came down hard on the Pharisees for invalidating the word of God by their tradition. This brings a question to my mind. Do we do the same by certain of our traditions in the Church? ....... By the way, I'm happy to note, Uncle Dave, that you have resumed your Bible reading after a 40-year gap. Perhaps an over-all bird's eye view might be a good approach, i.e., to read through the Bible first in order to get the big picture and a feel for what the Bible is all about. In this approach, one views the entire forest as a whole first, and then later goes back to study the trees in more detail. This is merely a suggestion; you may or may not feel it has merit. God bless you richly in your resumption of Bible reading and study. Hank: Thank you very much for your help and support. I guess I'm on the right track. When I finally woke up and realized how much I have needed God in my life, my game plan was to do just as you have suggested. That is to read through the Bible first and then go back "to study the trees."...As a new member of this forum, I can't tell you in words how much I appreciate the help and guidance that I have already received from the visitors and members that post here.I no longer feel as freightend and alone (And lost) as I have for the past several years.Your kindness and understanding has been most welcome to my heavy heart.----May God Bless All of You.
