2 | Did John the Baptist eat fruit or bugs? | Mark 1:6 | Makarios | 101118 | ||
Greetings TommyS, John the Baptist's simple food, clothing and life-style were a visual protest against self-indulgence. Locusts (insects) were among the "clean" foods (Lev. 11:21-22), as pointed out in an earlier post. John himself evokes the image of Elijah (2 Kings 1:8), who himself lived by humble means (1 Kings 17), and the Israelites were expecting Elijah before the Day of the Lord (Mal. 4:5). The angel Gabriel (whose name means "mighty one of God") announced to Zacharias that his son John would "go before Him [Christ] in the spirit and power of Elijah" (Mal. 4:5; Matt. 17:10-13; Luke 1:13-17). Blessings to you, Makarios |
