It "appears" to only indirectly, as indicated in Mark 1:34a: "And He healed many who were ill with various diseases..." Of course, the Bible doesn't speak to a lot of diseases (by name anyway) that have only been labeled in our modern era. For instance, when it speaks of the lame in Isa 35:5,6 it doesn't mention what disease caused the crippling problem. 1 Samuel 21:14 shows Achish's (the king of Gath) reaction to King David pretending to be crazy - which David did so as to not be viewed as a security risk. It says there: "Behold, you see the man behaving as a madman. Why do you bring him to me?" So, it appears that people where aware of mental issues, but you can be sure they didn't undertand the cause. Another interesting scripture is found in 1 Tim 5:23; Paul told Timothy to: "Drink water no longer exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses." No mention of the illnesses by "name" - no doubt they were more familiar with the symtoms as opposed to the cause. I'd be interested to see what anyone else has to say on the subject. |
