Does anyone know what the "fewer later mss. and versions" contain the last paragraph in italics of Mark 16:20? I see the footnote about this in my NASB, but I cannot find what latter versions the not refers to.

Hi, Tim... Welcome to the forum! We do not have the original copies of the Scriptures when they were written. However, we are blessed by having many copies of very early manuscripts of many books of the Bible. As I recall there are something over 24,000 various manuscripts from which the New Testament is translated. There is a field of study called textual criticism. This is the science by which it is determined, as closely as possible, what text was actually written. One of the many principles in textual criticism, is the thought that the oldest manuscripts probably contain the most accurate presentation of the text. What the note you are reading is telling you, is that the earliest manuscripts of Mark end chapter 16 verse 8. In other words, these manuscripts do not contain the text from Mark 16:9-20. Consequently, it is thought -- but not necessarily with complete certainty -- that that section was inserted at some later time. This is a good thing for the Bible student to know. There are some people that base entire teachings on this passage, even though some of the things mentioned are not repeated elsewhere in Scripture. A wise Bible student recognizes that any doctrine that God wants us to understand will be repeated in the Scriptures. Thus, teaching snake handling, for example, on this passage, would be very foolish, as it is not mentioned anywhere else in the Word. In Him, Doc |

Hello Doc. Thank you for taking the time to write to me, but you have not answered my specific question about the NASB's addition of the very last paragraph of the chapter, and latter part of verse 20. It is in italics in the NASB and within brackets. Here is the text: [And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.] The sidenote only says that "A few later mss. and versions contain this paragraph". My question is, which and how many particular mss. have this paragraph? Where did the NASB editors find it and why did they add it? You do not find it in the translations of the ESV, KJV or NIV, to name a few.

Hi, Tim... I did, indeed, misunderstand your question. I apologize. Often we benefit from the conclusions of scholarship, without being made privy to the means by which the conclusions are drawn. It is rather like benefiting from E equals M C squared, computationally, which thing any beginning Algebra student can do, versus working through the entire argument of Albert Einstein's Special Relativity. I am no Greek scholar, let alone a textual critic. However, I am given to understand that the "Editio Octava Critica Maior" assembled by Constantin von Tischendorf and the "Novum Testamentum Graece" assembled by Eberhard Nestle are good sources from which to follow the NASB translator's trail. Perhaps if you discover a definitive answer, you could share it with us on the forum. I was going to close, but one thing more occurred to me: You might check out the translation discussion in the Net Bible. Oftentimes there are more technical reasons provided concerning textual source, than are generally available elsewhere. In Him, Doc PS ...and one more thought... This is only second hand information, but I am given to understand that the ESV scholars have their deliberations available for reading by interested persons. Although, I am told, that those discussions and arguments were of a very esoteric nature. I was just happy to know of their existence -- but I'm too old to hope to learn enough to follow them. |

There are some significant problems with the NET's note about Mark 16:9-20. See http://onyxkylix.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-net-and-ending-of-mark.html for some clarifications.
