1 | Baptismal Regeneration - Mark 16:16 | Mark 16:16 | Searcher56 | 113864 | ||
Scripture ... Jhn 3:18, 6:47; Mat 28: 18-20; Mar 16:15-16; Act 8:9-24; 1Co 1:14-17... Bible scholars think Mark 16:9-20 is not even supposed to be in the Bible ... but, let us look at it anyway. Mark 16:15-16 is similar to the Great Commission - GO make disciples, baptizing, teaching (Mat 28:18-20) The last part of Mark 16:16 does NOT say - "but he who has believed and has been not baptized shall be condemned." ... or ... - "but he who has not believed and has been not baptized shall be condemned." ... or ... - "but he who has not believed and has been baptized shall be condemned." There are those who cannot be baptized - they may die seconds after believing, they live where there is no water, they are physically/medically unable. A person may be baptized in water; they can still be damned for not truly believing. A sorcerer named Simon believed and so was baptized. Yet later, Peter told him his heart was not right with God and that he should perish when he tried to buy the magical power he believed the apostles possessed (Act 8:9-24). Cross reference John 3:18 "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." Also read John 6:47. Nowhere in Scripture does it say, "He that is not baptized is condemned!" Paul said that he came to preach the gospel, not to baptize (1Co 1:14-17). Mark 16:16 shows that disbelief is that which causes condemnation, NOT lack of baptism. |

Searcher56, re: Mark 16:9-20. I think your statement that “Bible scholars think Mark 16: 9-20 is not even supposed to be in the Bible” is a bit too general, as not all bible scholars are of this opinion. Just some facts: Mark 16: 9-20 appears in the vast majority of the ancient manuscripts. It is missing from Codex Vaticanus (350 AD) and Codex Sinaiticus (375 AD) and some other early manuscripts. Vaticanus contains an entirely blank column (an anomaly within Vaticanus) between Mark 16:8 and Luke 1:1, as if to say “something belongs here”. And while Eusebius, a church historian who died about 340 AD, had some doubts regarding the origin of Mark 16: 9-20, he made suggestions regarding the punctuation for some of these verses. And this so-called long ending of Mark was known to both Justin (Justin Martyr) and to Tatian in the second century (approx 130 - 150 AD). So I think you could say that the authenticity or origin of Mark 16: 9-20 is debatable, but I don't think there is enough evidence to state “it is not even supposed to be in the Bible”. If I am reading too much into your statement, I apologize. As to the rest of your post, I would say that I generally agree. While I feel Baptism is important for a Christian, I would tend to agree that it is not required for salvation. Regarding Simon the sorcerer (Acts 8: 9-24), when Peter chastised him “when he tried to buy the magical power he believed the apostles possessed”, look at his response. He asked Peter to pray for him so that he could avoid the judgement that Peter pronounced, but we are not told that Simon repented and prayed for himself as Peter instructed him to do. Having said he believed, having been baptized, apparently Simon still could not bring himself to pray for forgiveness. Is that a hard-heart or what? “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30 (NIV) Thanks for the post. Blessings to you. |
