1 | "Ego ami" | Mark 14:62 | DocTrinsograce | 129391
I am given to understand that Christ frequently used the Greek "Ego ami." I further understand that the Septuagint used this same phrase for YHWH. One preacher I heard stated that this was an unusual Greek phrase, not regularly used. Now I know that not everyone in this forum believes that Christ spoke Greek, but I was hoping someone might still be willing to do a word study on "Ego ami." I find that the tools available to me do not yield satisfactorily conclusive answers.
2 | "Ego ami" | Mark 14:62 | Morant61 | 129416
Greetings DocTrinsograce! The phrase itself is not really unusual. It is equivalent to us saying 'I am'. It is simply an emphatic way was saying 'I am' in Greek, by using both the verb 'eimi' and the pronoun 'egw'. What is unusual is that Jesus very clearly uses it in contexts that harken back to the 'I am' of Jehovah at the burning bush. The Jewish leaders clearly understood what Jesus meant by His use of the phrase. For some examples of 'normal' usages, check out: Mt. 14:27, 24:5, 26:22, 26:25, Mk. 6:5, 13:6, Luke 1:19, 21:8, 24:39, Jn. 6:20, Acts 10:21, 18:10, 22:3, 26:29. The phrase is used 48 times in the NT. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
