2 | How does Jesus' grief almost kill him? | Mark 14:34 | Makarios | 105750 | ||
Ryan, In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was grieved to the point of death because He was to endure the cup of divine wrath (Ps. 75:8; Is. 51:17; Jer. 49:12) over sin, Satan, the power of death, and the guilt of iniquity. In Mark 14:34, Jesus' sorrow was so severe that it threatened to cause His death at that moment. It is possible for a person to die from sheer anguish. In Luke 22:44, His sweat became like great drops of blood. This suggests a dangerous condition known as hematidrosis, the effusion of blood in one's perspiration. It can be caused by extreme anguish or physical strain. Subcutaneous capillaries dilate and burst, mingling blood with sweat. Christ Himself stated that His distress had brought Him to the threshold of death (Matt. 26:38; Mark 14:34; Heb. 12:3,4). Blessings to you, Makarios |
