1 | Loving the Lord with our Mind | Mark 12:30 | DocTrinsograce | 143205 | ||
How do we love the Lord with our mind? We are created in the imago Dei -- the image of God. This includes, among other attributes, the ability to reason. There are three approaches to the use and discipline of formal logic common to Christianity: 1. Ministerial Use of Reason This is the use of logic/reason as a "handmaid" to the Bible and theology. Logic is not put on par with or above the Bible, but stands subordinate to God's revelation. (This is the form of logic I advocate.) 2. Magisterial Use of Reason This is placing logic/reason on equal footing with or actually above the Bible. Here the logic/reason of the individual or a group is allegedly the final judge, arbitrator, or authority of truth. (This is an abuse of logic.) 3. Anti-Intellectual This is the position of depreciating or expressly denying the role of reason/logic in apologetics and other concerns of Christianity. (Unfortunately, this is the view of many Christians and is frequently encouraged from the pulpit (or stage?).) |
