Hi Shawninfaith, If you haven't already, I recommend reading the entire context of the passage. The Amplified Version brings out the basic sense of the meaning: "But Jesus said to him, Follow Me, and leave the dead [in sin] to bury their own dead." The Tyndale Concise Bible Commentary says: In Matthew 8:22 Jesus was saying, “let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead.” There was no greater priority than following the Author of life. BradK, Wow, The Tyndale commentary puts the verse in a whole different light. I never saw the dead as spiritual dead before. I got the meaning this way... let those who are going to die bury the ones that died but you need to follow me now! Can the verse be also interperted this way instead of amplifying it? Seedling |
