1 | Do demons still exist? | Matt 8:16 | Hank | 4487
Are demons and being demon-possessed phenomena peculiar to Bible times, or do the Scriptures support the idea that demons are around still and possess people? Furthermore, does the Bible give any clue about the origin and characteristics of demons?

Hank, I was going to post this question but did a search first and saw that you posted it in May of 2001. I read the (short) thread including the verses Searcher cited, but didn't think the answer you were looking for was given. You said (in the thread) the answer lies in the defining of demons. I can't find that. Satisfy my curiosity please! P.S. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! cwade |

Cwade, happy new year to you also. Perhaps a good place to begin a study of demons and demon possession is in a responsible Bible dictionary, which will in turn provide one with copious scriptural references. Two such Bible dictionaries are Harper's and Holman. A good chiasmic narrative of demon possession is the account of the Gadarene demoniac in Mark 5. The idea of demons is shrouded in much superstition and wild -- and all to often bogus -- speculation that one is well advised to proceed carefully in his study of the subject and to avoid the myriad of pitfalls that lie in the path. However, two truths seem to emerge: [1] That the New Testament accounts of demon possession were real and that the Gospel writers were describing events that were not the same things as mere physcial or mental illnesses and, [2] that there still exist today forces in the world that can only be viewed as men being possessed by supernatural, evil spirits. Jesus certainly treated the cases of demon possession as realities and so therefore should we. The cure for demon possession in the New Testament was always faith in the power of Christ. It still is. --Hank

Hank-- Thanks! That's very helpful. I don't want to start a thread debate on cessation, but I am curious about your opinion on something... If demons still exist, does the fruit of the Spirit to cast out demons (by believers) still exist? cwade |

Hello cwade I'll let Hank answer for himself on this, but two things jump out about your posting. 1. You won't find casting out demons to be a fruit of the Spirit. It's an empowering of the Spirit. (I know it's a technical point, but we should be accurate.) 2. There is no reason to believe this empowering has ceased. We have no Scripture to indicate that it might cease. Steve |
