Linda, It is right living, so to be approval by God. After Jesus taught the Beatitudes (5:3-11) and about being salt and light (5:13-16), He talked about fulfillment of the Law (5:17-20). He said we needed to surpass the righteouness of the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law, in order to enter the kingdom of God (5:20). They had a set of standards that exceed the written Law (Torah). So Jesus increased the standard on certain areas (5:21-6:18). He did warn about practicing your righteousness before man (6:1). Next, He said where we should have our treasure (6:19-24), in heaven - His kingdom, for now. We see His kingdom in the first half of 6:33. In the immeadiate context of this verse you cited is about not worrying (6:25-34). So what I think Jesus is saying that while the righteousness of the leaders is high, His is higher and better. Focus on His kingdom and do not worry, just live a way that pleases God. Righteousness is dikaiosune in the Greek (Strong's 1343). 1.in a bro |
