1 | On earth in earth | Matt 6:10 | terrib | 150141
Hi Tim, Question for you about Greek prepositions. KJV Mat 6:10 "...Thy will be done in (epi) earth, as it is in (en) heaven. Could you explain the two usages of the word "in" in the above Scripture? Some translations use "on earth". The use of "on earth" seems to have an implication towards planetary or spherical and is impersonal compared to "in earth" which has an implication towards man, flesh, which is directly personal. Jesus always related the difference between flesh and spirit and here in the Lord's prayer I see the term "in earth" (flesh) as it is "in heaven" (spirit). Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Thanks, Your brother, terrib |

2 | On earth in earth | Matt 6:10 | Morant61 | 150150
Greetings Terrib! I'm not sure I can give you anything definitive, but 'epi' with the Gentative case (as in this verse) is translated as 'on' or 'upon'. I checked the Greek on this verse and it was interesting. The last clause actually reads: "...as in heaven also upon earth." I would definitely see two 'geographic' realms being thought of in this verse (even though heaven can't really be described as 'geographic'). :) The prayer seems to have in mind the transformation of this 'world' into what it ought to be. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, Yes, "...as in heaven also upon earth." That phraseology has a better value to me. That is what the ASV has, "as in heaven, so on earth." Thanks, terrib |
