1 | Love our enemies or attack them? | Matt 5:43 | donkid | 61670
What is the proper Christian response in light of Jesus' words to our terrorist enemies? The prevailing mood of revenge doesn't seem to follow this teaching from God, so when we pledge "One nation under God", which God do we mean?
2 | Love our enemies or attack them? | Matt 5:43 | Morant61 | 61713
Greetings Donkid! Very good question and one we must all think about during these difficult time. My position, and one which I believe to be Biblical is that there are two levels of response: personal and national. 1) Personal: The Sermon on the Mount, and many other passages, make it clear that we must love our enemies and pray for them. We must not harbor hate for anyone. 2) National: The national response though can be quite different. Rom. 13:4 describes rulers as '...an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer." So, while we as individuals must love our enemies, it is the function of government to protect us and act as agents of wrath. So, I firmly support the government taking 'just' action to protect us against acts of terror. While at the same time, call on all Christians to love and pray for those who attack us that God's message of grace would reach even them. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
