1 | What can you call someone? | Matt 5:22 | Norrie | 101350
Matt 5:22 But whoever says "you fool" will be in danger of hell. Why? Jesus called the Pharisees snakes and vipers, washed tombs, hypocrites, etc. If someone really is what they are being called, is it OK then?
2 | What can you call someone? | Matt 5:22 | Morant61 | 101351
Greetings Norrie! Here is an excellent quote from Kittel's concerning this verse. *********************** But since Jesus is hardly making casuistical distinctions, the two latter terms are to be seen as explanatory additions to the saying about anger. Anger and terms of abuse are closely related (cf. Jms. 1:19) and equally reprehensible. Since there is no real crescendo in the passage, since the two terms of abuse are virtually synonymous, and since the first court (û¨év§é§) comprises the supreme human and ultimate divine judgment, what we have is a threefold statement which achieves its effect by repetition. In the world of Jesus injury by words is of the utmost seriousness. Where there is anger and vilification, Jesus sees that the true problem is that there is no fellowship (cf. his own condemnation of the scribes and Pharisees as fools and blind in Mt. 23:17). Hence he is not just issuing a moral warning against anger and abuse but establishing by commitment to himself the true fellowship which excludes anger and the insults that express it. ********************** So, given the context of the passage, I would say that the person making the insult is doing so out of anger, not a desire to be precise! :-) As far as Jesus is concerned, I think Seeker4truth was right on earlier when he made the observation that God can judge where we cannot because He is perfect. Jesus knew the hearts and minds of those whom He was 'insulting'. We do not! So, I would rather speak 'soft words' than insulting words. Insulting words do nothing except make others angry and end relationships. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

3 | What can you call someone? | Matt 5:22 | John Reformed | 101583
Dear Tim, Jesus used "brother" in His admonotion. Do you see any reason behind His using of a famillial name, rather than a general term like "person"? John |
