This is the definition: strict conformity to the letter of the law rather than its spirit. Some say that confessing to a priest is a modern practice of legalism. Jesus atoned for our sin, and confessing to a priest shouldn't be necessary. Whenever someone leaves confession and hurts more than before they saw a priest, legalism has occured. | ||||||

To our litany of modern-day legalisms, could one not add any practice that is engaged in woodenly, slavishly and mechanically in conformity to church tradition or out of mere habit, but without spirit? This could include, for example, liturgies, prayers, communion, daily devotionals, or even the worship service -- performed regularly, flawlessly, in letter-perfect manner, but without spirit. --Hank | ||||||
