Hi, Dr. Jack... Here's how I have heard of the "seven baptisms:" 1. Baptism of Moses (1 Corinthians 10:2) 2. Baptism of Cup (Matthew 20:22) 3. Baptism of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13) 4. Baptism of Fire (Luke 3:16; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9) 5. Baptism of John (Matthew 3:6, 11) 6. Baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17) 7. Baptism of Church (1 Corinthians 1:13-17) In my understanding, the ordinance of Baptism in 5, 6, and 7 are the same thing. Also, one might possibly add the "hard saying" of 1 Corinthian 15:29. But I guess whoever originally put this teaching together needed it to come out to seven. If it was just a teaching method, then it worked, since I remembered them! If it is a theological approach, their point is too weakly made. If it was some kind of supposed divine implication of the number seven, then the non-Christian numerology is eisegetical. In Him, Doc |
