I think Luke 18:13 gives a good answer: "But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!'" The tax colloector realized there was nothing good in himself and acknowledged it before God. There was no pretext of a righteousness derived from the Law as the Pharisees had. He sought God's righteousness (see Phil 3:9). Steve |
