Greetings Ivory313, Here is some commentary on that verse.. "20:17 Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended. Mary was expressing a desire to hold on to His physical presence for fear that she would once again lose Him. Jesus' reference to His ascension signifies that He would only be temporarily with them and though she desperately wanted Him to stay, He could not. Jesus was with them only for 40 more days and then He ascended (Acts 1:3-11). After He went to the Father, He sent the Holy Spirit ("The Helper") so that they would not feel abandoned.." (1) I believe that the 'correct' rendition of this verse is "do not cling to me!" instead of "touch me not" or "do not touch me", since it is clear that people could touch him in John 20:26-27. The resurrected Jesus even consumed a fish (Luke 24:41-43) in the disciples' presence. So I believe that it is more of a response of "do not hold on to me" or "do not restrain me", since He was now their resurrected Lord whose work, at that point, was finished, and He could now return to the Father to intercede for us. Blessings to you, Makarios (1) MacArthur Study Bible, 1997, Word Publishing, John MacArthur, Author and General Editor |
