WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE BLOOD OF JESUS? |

The role of Jesus’ blood is that it serves as the witness/evidence of His death. He died in our place as a sacrifice for our sins. When we speak of Jesus’ blood, we are speaking both literally and symbolically of His sacrificial death on behalf of those who believe. In the OT, animals served as sacrifices for most sin. As you know, the blood from the various animal sacrifices would be sprinkled around the altar. On the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16), blood would be sprinkled upon the mercy seat, aka Ark of the Covenant. Leviticus 17:11 (which is a good verse to memorize) says “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.” The life is in the blood. When there is blood on the altar, a death has occurred. And it is important to note this - During this time of Israel’s history, God Himself told them that IF they would carry out these sacrifices, then they would receive atonement for their sin. A covenantal promise from God! So the Israelites’ were atoned for based on their faith in a blood sacrifice. Just like us. We receive atonement for sin based on our faith in a blood sacrifice. Azure cited those wonderful Hebrews 9 verses that state the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sin, how much more the blood of Christ…. Going further in Hebrews, according to the end of the faith chapter, Hebrews 11:39-40 indicates that the “great cloud of witnesses’” faith looked forward to and found fulfilment in Christ (though of course they did not know it at the time, but OT believers had faith in the promises of God, which included Christ) – “And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.” I hope this helps. I apologize for getting long-winded. IN Christ - Tina |
