1 | Was Mary a virgin her whole life | Matt 1:25 | Morant61 | 47959
Greetings Jawz! I have been searching through the writting of the Early Church Father's and as of yet have been unable to find any reference to Mary remaining a virgin after the birth of Christ. I found many passages where it would have been within the context to mention such a thing, but they never did. I did find one interesting passage in Irenaeus. He said: "To this effect they testify, [saying,] that before Joseph had come together with Mary, while she therefore remained in virginity, "she was found with child of the Holy Ghost;"(4) and that the angel Gabriel said unto her, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God;"(5) and that the angel said to Joseph in a dream, "Now this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, Behold, a virgin shall be with child." (Irenaeus Against Heresies - Book III, Chapter 21, Section 4). Notice that Irenaeus refers to the time before "Joseph had come together with Mary." It appears that he was aware that they had come together after the birth of Christ. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

I think you will find that it is almost a direct quote from the greek scripture. You are interpreting it in exactly the same way as you interpreted the passage. Irenaeus is not stating anything more or less than what scripture says.
