1 | What does "send her away" refer to? | Matt 1:19 | wleman | 63266
"Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly." (NASB) I'm wondering what most speakers of English today would understand by the words "send her away" here? a. understand the words literally as meaning "send her to some other place" b. some other meaning My mind frequently asks questions like this when I read the Bible. How do you personally think most speakers of English would answer my question? I ask this sincerely. I remember in the mid1960s when I was in Bible school and the NASB first came out. How refreshing it was to read the NASB. We only had the NASB New Testament in those days and we used it for personal evangelism. Now I am a missionary Bible translator. My wife and I have helped translate the Bible for a tribal group since 1975. I have also worked as an English editor, and have helped, by invitation, several English Bible translation teams. I have constructed a survey with questions like the above to help us determine what understanding people have of wordings in the NASB. I invite you to take this confidential survey, posted at Internet address: http://www.geocities.com/bible_translation/survey2.htm Scroll down until you get to the NASB test. Our Bible translation mission has learned that field testing significantly improves the quality of our Bible translations. Perhaps you would find it interesting to help determine what understandings people have of various English Bible wordings, including those of the NASB, which I loved to read and carry around with me, as a Bible school student many years ago. Side questions in the translation process ... I am writing a paper on worship, as I study it. I am interested in other cultures / languages ... as well as how you, and others translate it. 1. Do you let the English root for the word worship influence your translation ... use the words in the original that are translated worship in English ... or study the original and translate into their language directly, without the English influence. 2. In the native language, do they distinguish between being prostrate (worship) which is shachah (Hebrew), c@gid (Aramaic) and proskuneo (Greek) ... and service (or serve) 'abad (Hebrew) and latreia, from latreuo (Hebrew)? 3. If there is a difference, do you force Romans 12:1, and other passages into their word for worship, or do you let it be service (or serve)? 4. I presume their language has no English influence, so if their is a difference, I would like to know their words for worship and service (or serve). Steve ... email Searcher78@aol.com |

3 | What does "send her away" refer to? | Matt 1:19 | wleman | 63293
Steve, you've asked interesting questions. I can see that I would enjoy spending quality time on this NASB discussion list. (I just discovered it today.) 1. To answer your questions, we do not translate from English. We only want to translate the meaning of the original Biblical languages to the tribal language. 2.In the native language, the word for "worship" is completely different from the word for "serve." 3. I don't understand your question. Could you ask it in some other ways and I'll try again. 4. ehaoena is their word meaning "he's worshipping". It's a verb, which makes sense since worship is an activity. ehotse'ohevomotahoho is their word meaning "he's working for him" which would be one of the most likely ways they would word the idea of serving someone. Wayne, Question 3 again ... The NASB, and most other translations use the word worship in Romans 12:1. So would you say ehaoena or ehotse'ohevomotahoho. Steve |

5 | What does "send her away" refer to? | Matt 1:19 | wleman | 63345
Steve, thanks for clarifying. Here is the English back translation of our Cheyenne translation of Rom. 12:1. This is not a finalized translation and it has not been approved yet by one of our mission exegetical consultants. It could easily need further revision. Here it is: "Siblings, because God has had pity on us, I'm gonna beg you this way: Let's see, I wish that you would give all of your lives to God. You'll follow God that way, and that will make him pleased." Blessings, Wayne needing votes on Bible version field tests at URL: http://committed.to/fieldtesting |
