What exactly IS the yeast of the Parisees? Jesus was vehement in His warning about it yet do we recognize it in our midst today? What are some signs that a little leaven has (spoiled) the dough? 1 Cor 5:6; Gal 5:9. | ||||||

Greetings Emmaus! Thanks for the reply. Yes I agree with you. Indeed they were guilty of spreading teachings which prevented others from entering the Kingdom. I believe there are those in our midst today that do likewise. Yeast was the Jewish equivalent of evil. The yeast of the Pharisees was their false teaching. Although they were respected because of their education and overt attention to the Law, Jesus accused them of not correctly applying it to their own lives. ( John 5:37-40). He called them “blind guides.”(Mt 15:14) In Matthew 23:2-3 we see Christ's admonition to beware of those "leaders" who have assumed their own authority. Paul warns against false teachers in Galatians. Often their erroneous teachings are laced with truth which makes it difficult to separate out the yeast. How do we recognize them? I believe that the most insidious and infectious lies kneaded into the Gospel of Grace today are the dos and don'ts of performance Christianity. Ken Blue states that "Any religious activity that implies that Jesus' cross is not enough for our acceptance with God leads us away from Him, not to Him." Blue goes on to say, "The Judaizer's did not deny salvation through faith in Christ. They simply added to it a few Jewish disciplines, supposedly to help the Gentile believers go on to maturity (Gal 3:3)." This is as if to say that our maturation is dependent upon OUR religious performance - Bible study, prayer, service, tithing, etc. Of course these are not bad in themselves, but when they are posed to believers as a MEANS to an end, this becomes a "grace AND gospel" message. It denies the FINISHED work of Christ. We are accepted and approved because of CHRIST ALONE, not by anything we do. Nothing we do for Christ will give us any more love, acceptance and approval than we have IN HIM at the moment of salvation. If we base our relationship with God on Christ's work AND our own efforts, Paul says, "Christ will be of no benefit to you." (Gal 5:2) According to this description, any teacher that mixes works with Grace is spreading "another gospel"(2 Cor 11:3-4). When ministers of the "gospel of grace and" challenge those in their flock to work to attain holiness . . . we should say WHOA because Jesus said "Woe!" (Mt 23) mommapbs |

Thanks for the references! Jesus is the Bread of Life; He alone is the pure leaven. Yes, only this kind will be found in the Kingdom. (Perhaps that is why the Jews worshipped with unleavened Bread?) mommapbs |
