DSM: Often when I want to know what a verse or certain words in a verse mean I find it helpful to look it up in two or more versions of the Bible. If you read the following versions, you will see that "an evil and adulterous generation" is also translated as "a wicked and morally unfaithful generation", "an evil, faithless generation", and "evil and godless" people. In context, when Jesus said an evil and adulterous generation He meant that the people He was talking to at that time were part of "a wicked and morally unfaithful generation (people)". As it says in the Contemporary English Version, "You want a sign because you are evil and won't believe!" Another thing that helps a person understand a verse is to read it in the immediate context. If you have a translation with paragraph divisions, read the entire paragraph in which the verse appears. Otherwise, when you read the verse, read it along with the verses before and after it. Matthew 16:4 The Amplified Bible A wicked and morally unfaithful generation craves a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Then He left them and went away. Holy Bible, The New Living Translation Only an evil, faithless generation would ask for a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah." Then Jesus left them and went away. Contemporary English Version You want a sign because you are evil and won't believe! But the only sign you will be given is what happened to Jonah. Then Jesus left. Good News Translation - Second Edition How evil and godless are the people of this day! You ask me for a miracle? No! The only miracle you will be given is the miracle of Jonah. So he left them and went away. Grace to you, Kalos |

Greetings Kalos! Excellent comments my friend! If I may add a thought to your post, 'adultery' was often used as a figure of idolatry in the Old Testament. Israel was viewed as God's bride and any other worship was considered an act of adultery and made Israel a harlot. For instance, read Hosea, and one will see this figure used many times. Thus, in Mt. 16:4, Christ would seem to be calling Israel a spiritually unfaithful generation. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
