DSM: Often when I want to know what a verse or certain words in a verse mean I find it helpful to look it up in two or more versions of the Bible. If you read the following versions, you will see that "an evil and adulterous generation" is also translated as "a wicked and morally unfaithful generation", "an evil, faithless generation", and "evil and godless" people. In context, when Jesus said an evil and adulterous generation He meant that the people He was talking to at that time were part of "a wicked and morally unfaithful generation (people)". As it says in the Contemporary English Version, "You want a sign because you are evil and won't believe!" Another thing that helps a person understand a verse is to read it in the immediate context. If you have a translation with paragraph divisions, read the entire paragraph in which the verse appears. Otherwise, when you read the verse, read it along with the verses before and after it. Matthew 16:4 The Amplified Bible A wicked and morally unfaithful generation craves a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Then He left them and went away. Holy Bible, The New Living Translation Only an evil, faithless generation would ask for a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah." Then Jesus left them and went away. Contemporary English Version You want a sign because you are evil and won't believe! But the only sign you will be given is what happened to Jonah. Then Jesus left. Good News Translation - Second Edition How evil and godless are the people of this day! You ask me for a miracle? No! The only miracle you will be given is the miracle of Jonah. So he left them and went away. Grace to you, Kalos |

The Bible is clear that the adultery means any sexual acts out side the husband/wife relationship. All fornication, homosexaulality, beastiality adultry. 1 Cor. 6:9 And Jesus even included lustful thoughts Matt.5:27,28 Believers are called the body of Christ,in 1 Cor.6:15-20 says "Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot?Certainly not!Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For "the two"He says"shall become one flesh." But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.Flee sexual immorality.Every sin that a man does is outside the body,But he who commits sexual immorality, sins against his own body.Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God,and you are not your own?For you were bought at a price;therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. Adulterous is also used to describe people or nations that have turned away from God,to worship idols, this too is called fornication and adultry.Isa 57:3 |
