1 | Are we like the Pharisees? | Matt 16:1 | prayon | 4436
I think we are more like the Saducees today than the Pharisees. The Pharisees were very focused in their beliefs. They followed the traditions of the elders, believed in God's promises, and were looking for the Messiah. The Sadusees, on the other hand, didn't believe in the promises, didn't care about the bible, worked with the Roman government and were not looking for the Messiah. I think this describes the people of today more. So many people today could care less about religion but only about themselves. As with the Pharisees and the Sadusees a miracle could be done right in front of them and they wouldn't believe it. Jesus was at odds with them so much because they were being religious on the outside for and it was only for show because on the inside were full of nothing but self. They were wicked and they rejected the truth. I believe that He would of felt the same today as He did then. |

2 | Are we like the Pharisees? | Matt 16:1 | Hank | 4440
Prayon, your comparison between the Pharisees and the Sadducees is astute. It was the Sadducees who did not believe in the resurrection (Matt 22:23). I shall never forget that, because some time ago our pastor pointed this out, adding, "That's why they were sad, you see." Jews in Jesus' time had become literally enslaved by their own self-made rules and laws -- legalisms, as they are called. They practiced keeping the letter of the law but forgot about the spirit. Can that be said of some churches in our time?
