Hi, movingon... Dr. Kim Riddlebarger gives an interesting discussion of that very phrase in a short article here: http://www.ligonier.org/learn/articles/i-will-build-my-church/ From an Historic Baptist perspective, Charles H. Spurgeon gave a sermon the phrase in 1888: http://www.ccel.org/ccel/spurgeon/sermons34.xxxix.html What a blessed thing it is that Christ's own church -- built upon the rock of the kerygma -- composed of those called out by the Father, purchased by Son's blood, and sealed by the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:2). Question: What did the Lord mean when in Matt. 16:18 He said: "...I will build my church"? Christ died and shed His blood to save a Spiritual Kingdom, church ,those called or those who heard and obeyed and were added by GOD to His sons Speritual Kingdom,as Christ being the Chief or Corner Stone and each soul which believed and obeyed Christ's Word were (are) added as other Stones building a Spiritual Kingdom Christ being the HEAD of the church. 1 Peter 2:6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded 1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. |
