Hi, Edd... The kingdom of God (heaven) and the church are not synonymous, though when we mention one we often find ourselves talking about aspects of the other. The kingdom of God speaks to the Lord's rule and the whole setting in which that rule is applied (Psalm 45:6; Isaiah 45:23; 1 Corinthians 15:24) . The church, on the other hand, speaks to the body of believers who have been "called out" (Colossians 1:1-14; 1 Peter 2:9-10). There are "already" and "not yet" aspects of both. Probably the best thing is to have me give up trying to put it into words, and offer up something better articulated than I might otherwise provide. "The Kingdom is primarily the dynamic reign or kingly rule of God, and, derivatively, the sphere in which the rule is experienced. In biblical idiom, the Kingdom is not identified with its subjects. They are the people of God's rule who enter it, live under it, and are governed by it. The church is the community of the Kingdom but never the Kingdom itself. Jesus' disciples belong to the kingdom as the Kingdom belongs to them; but they are not the Kingdom. The Kingdom is the rule of God; the church is a society of men." -- George Eldon Ladd We could go into more detail on the comparison if you like. In Him, Doc |
