1 | What/who is "the rock" | Matt 16:18 | jdf | 45687
What is the generally accepted interpretation of "upon this rock"? What/who is "the rock"? Is Peter the rock? Or will the church be built upon the information ("rock")contained in Peter's statement in the prior verse that Jesus is the Christ?
2 | What/who is "the rock" | Matt 16:18 | Guy101 | 45715
This is not a subject i have studied at length but I believe these verses speak for themselves! I believe the rock is describing peters unshakeable faith granted to him by God so that Peter could be the first real missionary for Christ!
3 | What/who is "the rock" | Matt 16:18 | jawz | 46530
Ephesians 2:19-22 "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit." Since Christ himself is the cornerstone on which the church is built, Jesus could not have been referring to Peter as that very rock in Matthew 16:18, so it follows that it was Peter's confession of Christ that he was referring to. Jesus never speaks of two cornerstones. This is how it was understood by the Apostles, Peter never took a position of leadership among them, and it is also how it was understood by the early bishops (popes) of the church in Rome who never accepted such a claim and in fact gently rebuked those who held the church in Rome in such high esteem. |

4 | What/who is "the rock" | Matt 16:18 | Guy101 | 46569
The more i read the verse and the more i questuin myself the more i begin t think that this verse can be interpreted on so many levels it is almost impossible for us to specify exactly which one the author means..... if when this verse is read Christians can take comfort from either the rock of faith in jesus as displayed by peter or the rock of jesus as the cornerstone of there life then they are both good enough explanations for me! God speaks to those from his word where they need to be met... this verse depending on what God wants to say can be both evangelistic or a verse of encouragement. Sorry if my opinion is not very clear here as i am in a rush... i have a meeting to go to!!!!
