2 | If Law is quoted in NT, does it apply? | Matt 15:4 | RichardTX | 15930 | ||
Maybe. The idea of "Law" has taken on a new meaning in the NT. Under the old covenant, the Law was tied directly to the concept of forgiveness and even salvation; it formed the physical framework through which God fostered the creation of faith in His people (the real issue). It also protected them and provided them with many, many other benefits - including providing them with a view of God himself. In the NT, the Law as a framework for faith is gone, so quotes, like the one from Matthew 15:4, do not apply in the same sense they once did. However, all of the benefits of the law are still with us. God has, in these last days, simply created a new "center," a new standard, a new way. That way is Jesus Christ. God's nature hasn't changed and the validity of His laws haven't changed - in terms of us benefiting from them and pleasing him by obeying them. In fact, we are warned by Jesus that we must "remain in him" if we are to be a part of His kingdom. We cannot ignore the laws of God (the ones that deal with His nature - THIS IS THE KEY) if we are truly His. We must be careful, however, to not assume that just because Jesus quoted something that He meant for us to follow it in the same sense that the Jews of his day were required to follow it. Different time - different way. |
