Jesus was using two O.T. commands to show the religous leaders of his day how their own traditions violated the Law they held so dear. If you believe the Law no longer applies to the life of believers today, you have no problem with this particular passage. All you have to say is, "well, that was in the O.T. We are no longer under that system." If you, like I, beleive that that the Law has relevance for the believer today, you have to do a little more investigation into the passages. I do have a few quick observations to make concerning the passage in question: 1.) These commands were given to the nation of Israel whose government was not democratic/republic but was a theocracy (God-ruled). This passage applied to how a nation of Israel was to be governed (its legal code if you will)not how the current church should govern its believers. 2.) The principle of this law is still valid: We are to honor our parents. The pharisees violated even the basic principles of this scripture by letting children get away with not supporting their aging parents (They did not have welfare back then. THe only welfare system an aging parent had was his children). This is a quick response and I am sure you have something up your sleeve you are wanting to pull out. I look forward to hearing/reading it. |

4 | If Law is quoted in NT, does it apply? | Matt 15:4 | RichardTX | 15930 | ||
Maybe. The idea of "Law" has taken on a new meaning in the NT. Under the old covenant, the Law was tied directly to the concept of forgiveness and even salvation; it formed the physical framework through which God fostered the creation of faith in His people (the real issue). It also protected them and provided them with many, many other benefits - including providing them with a view of God himself. In the NT, the Law as a framework for faith is gone, so quotes, like the one from Matthew 15:4, do not apply in the same sense they once did. However, all of the benefits of the law are still with us. God has, in these last days, simply created a new "center," a new standard, a new way. That way is Jesus Christ. God's nature hasn't changed and the validity of His laws haven't changed - in terms of us benefiting from them and pleasing him by obeying them. In fact, we are warned by Jesus that we must "remain in him" if we are to be a part of His kingdom. We cannot ignore the laws of God (the ones that deal with His nature - THIS IS THE KEY) if we are truly His. We must be careful, however, to not assume that just because Jesus quoted something that He meant for us to follow it in the same sense that the Jews of his day were required to follow it. Different time - different way. |
