In Jeremiah 35, the Rechabites' refusal to drink wine is shown as an example of obedience to God, who uses Jeremiah to instruct Israel in obeying His laws. Q: Could this also be an example of men, so set in their ways, that they even refused a command from God? Explain verse 17.
2 | Explain Jeremiah 35, especially verse 17 | Matt 15:1 | gracefull | 81923
I belive you are asking if the refusal to drink wine by the Rechabites could be an 'example of men so set in their ways, that they even refused a command from God?' In context, I would say no...God sent Jeremiah to the call the Rechabites to use them as an example for Israel. He KNEW they would remain faithful to THEIR father's command. This was not an attempt to 'change' the Rechabites, but rather t use them as an example of faithfuness. He uses them as an example to humiliate His people... verse12-16 paraphrased...'Look at the Rechabites, who obey the command of their earthly ancestors to THIS VERY DAY but I have spoken to you and spoken frequently and you have not obeyed me! Their ancestors are long since dead and yet they continue to obey even now. I am still with you, stil speaking to you today, and you refuse to obey me!' God is using this example of faithfulness to shame His people. In context, this would not be scripture to prove hardness of heart from the Rechabites, but rather, an example of extreme faithfulness we should demonstrate. If these obeyed their eartly father after many generations how much more should we obey our heavenly Father? For a good example of people set in their ways, look at the Pharasees facing Jesus and refusing to release their traditions. God bless God bless |
