1 | What is a demon? | Matt 12:24 | Lon3RB | 184467
I realize that you have a dictionary to look up words on your site. However, this particular question has a background to it. You see I am taking a "Relgions of the World Class." That means that I am discussing different religions. Hinduism and Islam is behind us now. I have already had the tests for those religions. And I am doing fairly well. We are now on Christianity. It may be to my disadvantage or advantage that my teacher has roots in India. She is a branch of the Hindu religion call a Jaine. Anyway, while discussing Christianity we were discussing the spirit world. Which would seem to be either good or bad. For example if you are discussing the Holy Spirit, Archangels, Seriphims or Cheribims, that is an up side to spiritualism. However, if you are discussing demons that is a dark side. We discussed all this. The question came up as to "What is a demon?" When discussing this the teacher brought up "The Seven Deadly Sins?" But is sin a demon. It seemed to me that it was an inaccuracy. Jesus "cast out demons." He "healed the sick." for example if someone had epilepsy , Jesus healed that person. So was a demon sickness or disease. That didn't seem right either. So I told the teacher that I thought that a demon was a being. So she replied to me that a demon "is a being that prevents you from getting what you want." I kind of agreed with that. However, I think there might be some inaccuracy in that statement. I have actually asked my senior Pastor of the Lowell Assembly of God this question about demons. I am using this website to gain a greater understanding of the word demon. I thought I did understand it. I thought perhaps a demon was an evil spirit. Yet it seems like much more than that. I haven't done a search for my question. I figure it is very much involved. So I would like some feedback. It's not that I want to start a debate. I actually want a deeper understanding of the word demon. |

2 | What is a demon? | Matt 12:24 | jonp | 184468
Hi A demon is the same as an 'unclean spirit' and Jesus makes clear that they are under Satan's control and part of his kingdom, that is 'the dominion of darkness' (Matt 12.24-29; Colossians 1.13). Sin is not a demon, nor specifically caused by demons, nor do they ordinarily cause disease, although there are some who do. The Bible also distinguishes those who are demon possessed from 'lunatics' (Matt 4.24). Demons do in fact 'possess' people, but probably only when they open their lives to them in some way by dabbling in the occult. They do not necessarily try to prevent you from getting what you want unless what you want is spiritual truth. It need hardly be said that they are enemies of man and of Jesus. 3 | Do demons keep us from what we want? | Matt 12:24 | Lon3RB | 184487
Thank you for answering my question on demons. So a demon is an "unclean spirit." I also thought of a demon as an "evil spirit." Part one of this question is that a spirit , then, must be a being. A spirit is a spiritual being. We are human beings and have physical form. Spirits do not take on the same form as humans. Also, they must be a negative force in our lives. I thought that the statement of demons are "beings that prevent you from getting what you want" was actually a loose phrase. And the person who answered my question of "What is a demon" picked up on that. I am going to give you some background on the Hindu religion. I will give you it on there philosophy. This is not just so you can answer my question. It is also so that I can understand where my teacher is coming from. Once again I am looking for a deeper meaning. Hindus believe that people don't really know what they want. As a matter of fact , our first day of class we had to answer the question "What do you want?" I had read the chapter, so I don't know why this question had taken me by surprise. My answer was fulfillment. And quoting from my own writings "Someone else answered happiness. ONe person wanted to stay home. Another wanted to be a good father. Some wanted children. Many wanted success, power, money. I thought afterward "no one answered peace." Those are all material things . But perhaps the question goes deeper, than that . Maybe we don't really know what we want. It was also discussed in class that it is perhaps human nature, or maybe even learned behavior, that moves us to want more and more. The Bible mentions greed. Yet we get the things we want and aren't satisfied. We want more. So the answer lies, "What do you want?" That is what is it that you truly want?" In class while discussing Hinduism, we came up with three things that people really want. These are listed in the book by "Huston Smith called The World Religions" they are Pleasure, Worldy Success, Responsible Discharge of Duty, and Liberation. Liberation in my notes is "release from the finitde that restricts us from the limitless being, consciousness and bliss our hearts desire." In my notes under "Duty" , I have "Will to get verses Will to give. Will to win verses will to serve. And Faithful Performance versus Respect and Gratitude." I feel like I should have been better at taking notes. That way I could explain "Responsible Discharge of Duty " better. Anyway, the teacher is coming from this perspective in class. So when she says that a demon "is a being that prevents you from getting what you want," as loose as the phrase is, she is saying a lot. But she (her name is Mrs Shah) is also saying not what we think we want, but what we "really want." So according to what I have just written, and maybe I should think about this question, how does a demon prevent you from getting "what you really want?" What is a better way of stating this philosophy in Christian terms for better understand and accuracy? Also, I guess I need a better definition of the word spirit. Does it take an actual form or is it an idea? I think it might be a spiritual form. I think of it as a negative force in our lives. Once again this is for deeper meaning. It isn't for debate. If I had a teacher that was a Christian, we might approach this differently. |

4 | Do demons keep us from what we want? | Matt 12:24 | Searcher56 | 184490
Scripture ... Act 2:38, Rom 8:38-39, James 4 ... God's day to you, Lon3RB, I believe according to Acts 2:38 and other passages, that the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians and there is no room for demons win me. Romans 8:38-39 gives me security about external attacks. There are wants and needs. We should ask God to provide with the right motives. Read James 4. Searcher |
