1 | The Salt of the Covenant? | Lev 2:13 | Makarios | 93773
Greetings Darcy, Leviticus 2:13, Numbers 18:19, and 2 Chr. 13:5 all discuss salt in regards to the covenant.. Salt stands for permanence and incorruption, and it is indissoluble.. In 2 Chronicles 13:5, the permanency of the Davidic covenant is emphasized by referring to it as a 'covenant of salt.' In Numbers 18:19, the phrase "everlasting covenant of salt" is emphasizing a permanent provision for the priests, described in verses 8-19 of that chapter. As salt keeps its flavor, so the Lord's covenant with the priesthood was just as enduring. The Lord would provide through the offerings of His people for His priests forever. In Leviticus 2:13, "salt" was first being used as a play on words, since salt was emblematic of permanence or loyalty to the covenant. Secondly, salt was specifically commanded to be used in offerings. Salt, which does not burn, was used as a metaphor that spoke of durability and permanence. The writer specifically chose to use the wording "covenant of salt" to illustrate the permanency of specific things, since salt was used to sprinkle on burnt offerings (Ezek. 43:24), and was used as one of the ingredients in the special incense compounded for the sanctuary (Ex. 30:35). Jesus uses salt metaphorically in Matthew 5:13 in much the same regard - preservation and permanency. Paul uses salt metaphorically in Colossians 4:6, stating that a Christian's conversation is to be wholesome (see Col. 3:8, Eph. 4:29). James alludes to salt's indissoluble properties in James 3:12, stating "Nor can salt water produce fresh." Elijah uses salt in 2 Kings 2:20 to purify the spring, verifying that it was the Lord who accomplished that miracle. Blessings to you, Makarios |

2 | The Salt of the Covenant? | Lev 2:13 | DarcyA | 93785
Hi Makarios, Thank you, for the information. I knew of the salt covenant. But the Abrahamic Covenent I didn't know that salt was used. So I thought the salt mentioned there was prophetic or something else like metaphoric preserving the covenant and showing it was an everlasting covenant with the Nation of Isreal or both. |
