1 | This is not a heresy question! | Lev 25:9 | Morant61 | 94449 | ||
Greetings DarcyA! Intresting question my friend! 'Atonement' isn't really a Greek or a Hebrew word, it is an Anglo-saxon word used to translate several different Greek and Hebrew words. So, while their isn't 'one' word for atonement in the New Testament, there are several references to the concept of atonement in the New Testament. Heb. 9:6-15 compares the work of Christ on the cross to the Old Testament Day of Atonement. Heb. 10:5-18 does the same. The LXX uses the word 'hilosmos' to translate one of the three occurances of the 'Day of Atonement' in the OT. 1 John 2:2 also uses 'hilosmos' to refer to the effect of Christ's death upon the cross. So, I would say that it is appropriate to speak of the atoning power of the blood of Christ! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
