1 | eye for an eye | Lev 24:20 | DocTrinsograce | 137762
Hi, Just... No, the eye for eye and tooth for tooth was actually a new concept to the ancients. Jews use this expression today (I don't know how it is written, but phonetically they say, "Ein taken ein shen taken shen"). It was a novel concept to them to *limit* retribution. Thus it was actually an expression of mercy. In modern English we might say, "Just as he has injured a man, so it shall be inflicted, but no more." The Code of Hammurabi contained a similar statement, but it was more along the lines, "Just as he has injured a man, so it shall be inflicted, at least to that extent!" In Him, Doc PS I'd love to discuss art in the forum sometime. When looking through church history you can see some pretty interesting shifts in what is considered good art. Personally, I'm so un-artistic that I can be perfectly comfortable wearing a paisley shirt with striped pants. :-) |

2 | eye for an eye | Lev 24:20 | Just Read Mark | 137804
I guess I was thinking that eye for an eye is a little like: "Do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself." It would certainly instill some empathy: " here is the exact suffering the other person went through, so that you understand what it's like." In a brutal way, I can see how you can get from there to the more visionary step of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you..." (Matt 7...) As for art: there is so much! Where faith and art come together, I am just filled with curiosity and joy. I shared a set of representations of Jesus with our church youth group this weekend, and it opened up the best prayer time we have ever had together. The images, spanning centuries and cultures, pulled so much reflective thought out of them. Exhilerating. God Bless! JRM |

Sorry, JR... I didn't mean to dismiss your suggestion out of hand. I sort of hyper-focused on the phrases themselves. The connection between this verse and Matthew 7:2 is an interesting one... I'll have to give it more thought. --Doc
