Molech was the chief god of the Phonecians. Human sacrifices were offered up to this idol, the victims being slowly burnt to death in the arms of the idol, which were made of metal, hollow, and could be heated from the inside. Manasseh sacrificed his son to Molech. Solomon erected an alter to this god on one of the summits of Mt.Olivet(1Kings11:7). This idol worship being continued, both there and in Trophet, until Josiah abolished it and defiled the altars(2Kings23:32). His son Jehoahaz revived this worship. Molech was worshiped by the Phonecian colonies, as at Carthge, where htere were at one time sacrificed 200 boys, believing this would relieve the city from a siege. | ||||||
