1 | Avoid a Sugar Coated Gospel | Zech 12:3 | DocTrinsograce | 186113
"Avoid a sugared gospel as you would shun sugar of lead. Seek the gospel which rips up and tears and cuts and wounds and hacks and even kills, for that is the gospel that makes alive again. And when you have found it, give good heed to it. Let it enter into your inmost being. As the rain soaks into the ground, so pray the Lord to let His gospel soak into your soul." --Charles H. Spurgeon
2 | Avoid a Sugar Coated Gospel | Zech 12:3 | Hank | 186114
Doc, could we say without dishonor either to the Gospel or the Prince of Preachers that the gospel IS a little like MandM's? It melts in your heart and not in your hands. I stole this idea in a sneaky, round-about way from our brothers Searcher and jthetrick. :-) But if Spurgeon was moved to use the phrase "sugared gospel" in his time, what would he call the sickening mess that abounds in so much of Christendom today? Paul's solemn charge to Timothy holds today as much as it ever did: "Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths." (2 Timothy 4:2-4, NASB). --Hank
3 | Avoid a Sugar Coated Gospel | Zech 12:3 | DocTrinsograce | 186117
Hi, Brother Hank... I bow to the superior knowledge of our brothers regarding the recuperative powers of MandM's. I doubt that Spurgeon's warnings would differ much in our day. Certainly all of his predictions regarding the abandonment of sound doctrine have come to pass. Therefore, his words ring with the same pertinence today as they did in his day. He said, "Years ago, when people were converted, there used to be such a thing as conviction of sin. The great subsoil plough of soul-anguish was used to tear deep into the soul. Fire also burned in the mind with exceeding heat: as men saw sin, and felt its dreadful results...but now we are dinned with bragging about rapid salvations." In Him, Doc |
