Greetings JB Hudson, Exodus 20:17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor." [NASB] "covet (kuv'it) vt., vi. to want ardently (esp., something that another person has); long for with envy - SYN. ENVY - cov'eter n." (1) I have recently interpreted Exodus 20:17 like this "You shall not covet your neighbor's ____" And you fill in the blank with whatever you see that your neighbor has that you begin to secretly desire.. The fallen, sinful nature natually inclines us to want that which we view as better or simply want because we don't have it.. But God desires that we do not covet what everyone else has, but be satisfied with what He has given us and blessed us with (Philippians 4:11). Blessings to you, Makarios (1) Webster's New World College Dictionary, 3rd Edition, pg. 320, Macmillan USA, 1997 |
