CYPRUS (si3´prus). A large island in the Mediterranean sixty miles off the coast of Syria. Its length is about 138 miles and its greatest width 60 miles. It was once inhabited by the Phoenicians. In 447 B.C. the Greeks controlled it; in 58 B.C. it fell to the Romans. At the death of Alexander the Great it had been incorporated with Egypt, and it was an imperial province in 27 B.C. The first NT notice of Cyprus is in Acts 4:36, where it is mentioned as the native place of Barnabas. It appears prominently in connection with the early spread of Christianity (Acts 11:19-20). Paul and Barnabas visited it A.D. 44, and it was Paul’s first missionary field (Acts 13:4-13). The Kittim of Genesis 10:4 and the Chittim of Isaiah 23:1 (rendered “Cyprus” in the NIV) referred initially to the inhabitants of Citium and later to the inhabitants of the whole island. Cyprus was known as Elishah in Ezekiel 27:7. Among the more important excavations on the island are those at Paphos and Salamis. |
