1 | John 10:10 Who is responsible for death? | Lam 3:32 | B Michalcik | 236795
WE see that God gave Satan permission to bring harm to Job and his family members. When tragedy happens.....many are quick to blame God. Others blame the devil. Death is an enemy. A friend was questioning today about the death of a two year old girl (a tragic accident). How do you respond to who is responsible for someone's death?

Dear B, Why questions are always the most difficult of questions to answer. The what, where, when, how, who questions are much easier. We know that we exist solely because of God (Acts 17:24, 28). We further know that the very moment of our birth and death are in His hands (Psalm 31:15). Some things we are simply not intended to know (Deuteronomy 29:29). By the way, I appreciated your saying that "Death is an enemy." That is quite true (cf 1 Corinthians 15:26). Nonetheless, we do not grieve as those who do not know the Lord (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Consequently, asking "Who is responsible?" is no simple matter. Look how difficult that is even in human jurisprudence. What you must do when responding to these questions is discern the motivations of the person asking the question. As you probably realize, a lot of people who ask why questions are not so much looking for an answer, as they are for a way out. They continually sense their own guilt, so they hope to find a way to divert that guilt with blame, etc. They are desperate to resist submission to a holy, perfect, omnipotent, Creator -- the One they know they will have to give an accounting of responsibility. Genuine inquiries concerning theodicy are extremely rare. There is nothing wrong with simply saying, "I do not know." But you can follow up with, "But let me tell you about the one who will be responsible for eliminating death!" (cf Isaiah 25:8; 2 Timothy 1:10; Revelation 21:4) Of course, when you are dealing with individuals who are grieving, trying to answer why questions is never fruitful. The older you get, the more you will find this to be true. Those are times simply to mourn with those who are mourning (Romans 12:15). In Him, Doc |
