Hi Mommapbs, In a post here on the forum I recommended the book "Hebrew Honey", copyright 1965 by Al Novak, Library of Congress card no. 64-252876. In that book I found the word "call" but not "speak". Perhaps in his book "More Hebrew Honey" the word speak could be found. In any case, here is the entry for "call" as found in "Hebrew Honey". "CALL: "Call unto me, and I will answer thee and..." (Jer. 33:3). This is a big word in the Bible. It is found nearly one thousand times. Over one-half of those times it is translated form this Hebrew word "qara" which means: To cry, to clamor--Gen. 39:14, the sound expressing somewhat the meaning of it. To call any one to oneself--Gen. 27:1. Early did man begin calling others to him to help him. Even so should we call for God. To call a solemn assembly--Joel 1:14. To have church. To invite, to bid as to a feast (I Sam. 9:13). This is good for church members who ought to be out urging people to come in for a feast. To propose an alliance, a call to peace--Deut. 20:10 and Judg. 21:13. No wonder sinners call upon God without whose pardon and alliance there is no peace. To celebrate, e.g., a name--Psalm 79:6. Here a people have the wrath of God on them because they did not call on His name. To read, to recite aloud before an assembly--Josh. 8:34,35 and Exod. 24:7. To meet--Gen. 46:29. To meet God is to call upon Him and to call upon Him is to meet Him. This is sweet intercourse., A partridge--Jer. 17:11. This bird was so called from its cry. That must be a healthy parish where people sound like partridges calling upon their heavenly Parent." Also in the book is "proclaim". "PROCLAIM: "...According to the word of the Lord which the man of God proclaimed'", (II Kings 23:16). The Hebrew word here is "qara" having in its sound some of its meaning such as crying, clamoring, and so on. For the many significations of this word turn back to CALL." Also, "PREACH: ...Another Hebrew word (Kara), is translated "Preach" in Jonah 3:2, "Arise, go to Ninevah...and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee". For the various shades of meaning in Kara turn back to Call. One cannot help but note that the word for Preach is the same as the word for Call and that God calls men to preach." These quotes should give some food for thought. From the heart, Ray |
